HAI Seminar with Erik Altman: Synthetic Data Sets for the Financial Industry

21.05.2025
IBM Synthetic Data Sets (SDS) were developed for use cases in the financial industry. Erik Altman, a research scientist at IBM, explores how SDS can label fraud and criminal activity, offering a strong foundation for training AI detection models. Unlike many current synthetic data approaches, SDS is not built using large language models but through an agent-based virtual world design. Altman highlights the key advantages of this method, as well as the challenges it poses for training effective detection models. This seminar was recorded on May 7, 2025 at Stanford University.

Inside Stanford HAI's Congressional Boot Camp on AI

07.08.2025
Now in its fifth year, Stanford HAI's Congressional Boot Camp on AI has been bridging the critical gap between Silicon Valley and Capitol Hill. Building on the legacy of a pioneering cybersecurity boot camp at Stanford, this intensive program brings House and Senate staffers to Stanford's campus, where they engage with world-class scholars, Silicon Valley leaders, and civil society pioneers to explore the latest AI developments and gain the comprehensive knowledge needed to think critically about regulating and governing this rapidly evolving technology. As AI advancements continue to outpace traditional policy frameworks, our boot camp leverages the multidisciplinary expertise across all seven Stanford schools to equip participants with both the technical understanding and policy insights essential for shaping the future of AI governance.

HAI Seminar with Andy Konwinski and Dave Patterson: Shaping AI's Impact on Billions of Lives

20.06.2025
Co-authors Dave Patterson and Andy Konwinski discuss themes from their new research paper, "Shaping AI's Impact on Billions of Lives." As is often the case with widely-used technologies in market economies, the AI community is at risk of becoming polarized to either take a laissez-faire attitude toward AI development, or to call for government overregulation. Between these two poles, the authors argue that we are still in the early days of practical AI, and that focused efforts by practitioners, policymakers, and other stakeholders can still maximize the upsides of AI and minimize its downsides. This seminar was recorded on May 21, 2025 at Stanford University.
