The Puzzling Tango Between Life Sciences and Algorithms (Courant Institute of New York University)
Dennis Shasha, Julius Silver Professor of Computer Science, Courant Institute of New York University
Abstract:
The interplay between biology and computation is deep and practical. This talk will illustrate this point through the following concrete examples:
1. Computer applications from finance to rocket design use genetic algorithms to solve problems.
2. Vaccine designers use algorithms to build slow-growing viruses.
3. Experimental design uses a safecracking algorithm to avoid testing all conditions.
4. A little machine learning can allow inexpensive tests to predict the evolution of a disease.
