(TUA2) Keynote: The rise of model-based data and its implications for social science and policy
Keynote: The rise of model-based data and its implications for social science and policy.
In this talk Seth will argue that data in the social sciences are undergoing a fundamental shift. Increasingly, the data used by social scientists are the output of models, as opposed to being rooted in direct observation of the social world.
This transition has been unfolding for decades but has been accelerated by concerns about differential privacy, the politicization of national statistical systems, and survey non-response. This change necessitates an epistemic shift for urban planners, researchers and policy makers.
Seth will describe and establish the “modelification” of data, demonstrate its impact on planning practice and social scientific inference, and talk about what this means for the future of urban analytics.
The urban analytics programme is pleased to host its first hybrid event. The event will be the programmes first in-person at scale event since October 2019.
About the event
The event will be split over two days, with a different focus for each. Day one will feature talks and networking sessions, offering the opportunity to catch up on recent research from across the community, and hear the latest thoughts of some leading thinkers in the field. There will be two keynote talks from Vanessa Lawrence and Seth Spielman.
Day two will see a series of breakout sessions, with participants working on a vision of the future of urban analytics – or ‘urban analytics 2.0’ – in light of recent developments such as the government’s National AI Strategy and the Turing’s move towards ‘Turing 2.0’.
Participation is welcomed from all members of the Turing’s urban analytics community, on either or both days of the event.
