Chris Lattner, inventor of the Swift programming language which powers iPhones and Macs, spoke about his career passion for inventing programming languages to lessen developer “suffering.” His new company, Modular, has released a language to do just that for AI developers, called Mojo. Lattner alluded to a future software platform from Modular that will bridge the gaps between the mishmash of AI tools that developers use today.
Lattner dished on his former employment at Apple, Google, and Tesla, and predicted that Apple would bring Siri up to the level of ChatGPT by the end of 2024. He also predicted that Tesla’s self-driving system would remain behind rivals like Waymo, noting that his job as the company’s former Head of Autopilot had been to make Teslas “fully-self-driving by the end of 2017.”
