Chase Lochmiller, co-founder of Crusoe Energy, presented a refreshing take on one of the “infrastructure” problems confronting AI: power. His company has developed a clever scheme of utilizing “stranded” energy assets, like flared natural gas, to run portable data centers—and the cost of power is going to be a big issue as AI models get gigantic. “We have an infinite demand for progress, and progress means consuming more,” said Lochmiller, and it all starts with power. Lochmiller was a crypto entrepreneur and remains bullish on that business, and he regards AI as nothing less than “a super-science that will make everything better.”

Lochmiller was a last minute addition to the lineup after I met him at a pre-conference dinner co-hosted with Felicis. His company Crusoe is one of those companies that has suddenly started coming up a lot. (This always makes me suspicious someone is raising more money.) Lochmiller is a character. He’s a former crypto investor who has literally climbed Mount Everest.
