AI as a Way to Find Win-Win Solutions

Jayson Marwaha, Surgery Resident, Georgetown University Hospital

Abstract:
The AI revolution in healthcare has already produced predictive tools with tremendous potential to improve care for patients undergoing surgery. At the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), one of Harvard’s teaching hospitals, researchers have built algorithms that predict when certain patients will benefit most from surgery, how many opioids patients will need after surgery, and more. But almost all of these inventions have yet to actually be used to benefit patients. Surgery, a field rooted in history and tradition, trails other specialties in its adoption of this new technology. Why are surgeons so hesitant to take advantage of the value of AI? In this talk, Jayson shows how researchers at BIDMC are building surgeon-friendly AI: predicting the right metrics, incorporating their “gestalt” into every model, and ultimately getting them to trust the algorithm.
