Abstract:
As medical devices become cloud-enabled, we have new tools to monitor and support the patient’s therapeutic journey. AI provides valuable tools that can support the patient’s therapy and user experience. Cala Health developed a non-invasive wrist-worn neurostimulator for symptomatic relief of essential tremor. The device transmits usage data to the service provider, enabling the analysis of patient-device interactions in near-real time. To better understand patient-device interactions and their impact on treatment efficacy, we used Markov chain and artificial neural networks to model data from an at-home clinical trial. From the device data, we used the model to identify and label normal and abnormal device usage periods. This information can be used as a part of a platform to provide personalized assistance for the patient as well as for improving device design.
